North Yorkshire
North Yorkshire is a beautiful rural county that stretches from the North Sea coast across much of northern England and encompasses two National Parks and a mountain range, providing the ideal terrain for numerous outdoor activities. There are also many castles, abbeys and stately homes throughout the countryside that show off the county’s rich historical heritage. The ancient city of York is a treasure trove of historic buildings and museums, while the smaller towns and villages are full of rural charm and that famous warm northern hospitality.
Places to go in North Yorkshire
Most of the Yorkshire Dales and all of the North York Moors lie within the county’s boundaries. The two National Parks provide a beautiful scenic backdrop for hiking and biking along public footpaths such as the tough Pennine Way. For the more adventurous, you can try activities including zip-lining and other high-wire pursuits in Dalby Forest and watersports such as kayaking on the River Ure. Centres like Log Heights offer a full range of outdoor activities. If sports aren’t your thing there are lots of natural attractions to take in, including the amazing Brimham Rocks formations and White Scar Cave, the longest show cave in Britain. The countryside is also home to some of England’s grandest historical landmarks such as Fountains Abbey and the Studley Royal Water Garden. The ruins of Bolton Castle, dating back to the 14th Century, and the 16th Century Whitby Abbey are also worth a visit.
