The Rookery - The Stewartry of Kirkcudbright - Sleeps 4

The Rookery at Glenholme Country House in Kirkcudbright

The Rookery in The Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, a cottage in Dumfries and Galloway

Award-winning interiors and beautiful gardens

Located just a mile from the centre of the small fishing port of Kirkcudbright in one of the most beautiful parts of South West Scotland, The Rookery is attached to Glenholme Country House. What were once the servants' quarters of the main house, have been transformed into light and airy self-catering accommodation for up to four people.

There are two bedrooms, one downstairs with a shower room, one upstairs with a bathroom. The main rooms all have old-fashioned, tongue-and-groove panelling and face south to catch the sun. For days when the sun is not quite so visible, however, there is an open log fire in the big living and dining room as well as full central heating. There is also a collection of antique washboards on the wall, but we don’t expect you to use them: there is an automatic washing machine in the kitchen, along with a tumble drier. If you enjoy cooking, the kitchen has beautiful beechwood work surfaces and cooker with a gas hob and two electric ovens – as well as a view out over the orchard and the vegetable garden.

And if you don't enjoy cooking, we offer dinners in the main house on most evenings, using local produce and vegetables from the garden whenever possible. Just let us know beforehand if you would like to eat in. We will ask about your likes and dislikes and build a menu to suit. Vegetarian meals are not a problem.

There Rookery has a television, DVD and CD player as well as wireless internet access throughout.

Towels and bedding (duvets and duvet covers) are provided for guests in the Rookery. Linen is changed and the Rookery cleaned once a week. Please note that we do not provide swimming towels; and we do not provide equipment for babies or toddlers.

Guests in the Rookery have their own private area of garden with garden furniture and a barbecue. They are also welcome to wander and enjoy the rest of Glenholme’s extensive gardens. But there is an unfenced pond in the garden (full of newts and other interesting things), so please be very careful if you have children.

We do not accept pets (or have pets ourselves), so if you are allergic, you need not worry. All our bedding is pure cotton and the carpets are wool.

The Rookery is owned and run by Laurence and Jennifer Bristow-Smith. Laurence is a writer, a former British diplomat and the cook. Jennifer is an artist by training and now runs her own business specialising in antique and vintage textiles. She is responsible for the style and the beautiful interiors. Between us, we speak French, Italian, Norwegian and Chinese.

Short breaks available in the off season.
