Yorkshire Dales
Outdoor adventures in the Yorkshire Dales are easy to find. Potholing, fishing, walking and climbing are in abundance and the network of bridleways means that it is easy to explore the area by bike. The southern dales are more popular with day-trippers whereas the northern dales, where the terrain is more rugged, attract visitors who want to confront the challenges of the landscape and witness spectacular views. For something a little less strenuous, head west – there are plenty of scenic towns and villages with tearooms and shops. There are also a number museums and visitor centres where you can find out more about the rich heritage of an area where people have lived for 10,000 years.
Places to go in the Yorkshire Dales
Wensleydale is in the north of the Yorkshire dales. The sweeping valley accommodates hidden waterfalls and wooded knolls as well as Hawes, a bustling market town practically bursting with tea shops and craft based visitor attractions. Watch traditional ropemaking, indulge in some authentic Wensleydale cheese and visit antique shops to find out more about the rich heritage of this part of Britain. An area in the West Dales known as the Three Peaks is the perfect destination for hillwalkers. Over 100,000 people visit the area each year to climb Ingleborough, just one of the three peaks that presents a challenging 700m ascent. A visit to this Site of Special Scientific Interest is a must for outdoor enthusiasts. Nidderdale is in the east side of the Yorkshire Dales and offers the visitor warm and welcoming country pubs, tearooms and plenty of craft centres full of local arts and crafts.
Our Top Picks in the Yorkshire Dales
We want you to enjoy the best that the Yorkshire Dales has to offer and so here's a selection of our favourite things to see and do;
Richmond
There are year-round activities and events in Richmond in the north of the Dales. When visiting the area be sure to check what is on the agenda as local traditions are kept alive in theatre, music, street fairs and craft events. A firm favourite is the mock civil war battles and agricultural events. Even when nothing much is happening in the social calendar you are likely to see a quaint side of Yorkshire living as locals demonstrate their sheepdog training skills, fell running capabilities and partake in a game of quoits. A humbling experience in a breath-taking setting.
Potholing in Nidderdale
There are plenty of places to go potholing and caving in the Yorkshire dales, but taking the opportunity to explore the vast limestone cleft in ‘Yorkshire’s little Switzerland’ is not to be missed, it is 80 feet deep in some places! Parking is ample and there are family friendly walks, a play area and a café where you can take a well earned rest after your outdoor adventure.
Mother Shipton’s Cave
Although not strictly in the Dales, the unique attraction of Mother Shipton’s cave cannot be missed. Steeped in superstition and terrifying end of the world predictions, the cave and petrifying well entices plenty of visitors heading for the Dales. There are regular tours that highlight the trials and tribulations of Mother Shipton, but there is plenty of information available without the tour to find out just how the waters of the well can turn anything placed in its path into stone; and of course details about the bridge that foretells the world’s end if it falls just one more time.
