Holiday Cottages in Northumberland & County Durham
Holiday Cottages in Northumberland and County Durham
Northumberland is home to areas of outstanding natural beauty, mead distilleries, grey seals, Hadrian’s Wall and more castles than anywhere else in England. From a holiday cottage in Northumberland you can explore the major sights of North East England as well as hidden gems like St. Cuthbert’s Isle on Lindisfarne, the winding byroads north of Newcastle, and the ramparts around Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Probably the most famous of Northumberland’s attractions, Hadrian’s Wall, stretches from Segedunum near the River Tyne across to the shores of the Solway Firth. A considerable distance of the wall still remains, far more than of the other two Roman fortifications built across England (Agricola’s Ditch and the Antonine Wall) and it is this level of preservation which has elevated Hadrian’s Wall to the heights of World Heritage Site.
Holiday cottages in County Durham make a superb base for exploring the Northern Pennines and the Durham Heritage Coast, as well as being close to what Bill Bryson has described as “the best cathedral on Planet Earth”. Durham Cathedral is one of the most famous Norman buildings in the world and in 2001 was voted as Britain’s best-loved building.
