Seek out the silence, tranquillity and spectacular views which this noted Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so loved by artists, has to offer. After breakfast on Avalon’s suntrap terrace, read a book at one of the seating areas within Avalon’s secret valleyside garden – and simply relax. Or visit the nearby Lamorna Wink Inn for a fresh crab sandwich and a pint of Doombar. Go kayaking, fishing, or diving from the cove, which has its own cafe facilities alongside the bay. Check out the pool at the prestigious Cove Hotel (immediately below Avalon) where cocktails and a restaurant are also available. Explore the many local footpaths, including the South West Coast Path, taking in the flora, fauna, birdlife, and fresh air, on the way. Those needing to venture further aflield within this very special part of Cornwall will find that Avalon makes an ideal base.
Constructed approaching 50 years ago into the sheltered site of a former granite quarry, Avalon enjoys an elevated position, which allows both valley and coastal views whilst being within a short walk of the centre of Lamorna. Inspired by the topography of The Minack Theatre at nearby Porthcurno, the original owner created the tiered walkways and planting that has created the mature, multi-layered garden of Avalon that is waiting to be explored today. Enjoy a barbecue at the picnic bench in the secluded lower garden area which leads off the terrace, or discover Lamorna’s timeless atmosphere, from one of the seating areas that can be found higher up in the garden which is planted with a wide range of mature shrubs – most notably the spring flowering camellias. The garden has proved itself not just as a refuge, but also as an adventure playground for children, although care should be taken at all times owing to the uneven terrain and steps.
